Red & Black Wedding Gowns
Summary: Some women choose wedding dresses that are not in the traditional Christian white or ivory color for shock value, others do it because another color represents the feeling that they have about their wedding.

A red and black wedding gown may seem like heavy colors but they represent quite a few feelings that are important in a marriage and wedding.  For instance, love is very important in any wedding.  Red has been used as a color to represent love.  Even valentine cards use red hearts as a symbol to represent love.

Red is also a symbol of passion.  Passion is important in a relationship and wedding, so representing them in a wedding tradition fits in a ceremony as well.

A gothic wedding theme does come to mind when these colors are expressed in one wedding dress design.  While this does not always happen, gothic weddings can be very interesting and mysterious occasions.

I have been to one gothic wedding in my life, and no it was not mine!  I really liked it even though I have never been interested in the gothic style.  The ceremony was held late in the evening and had the bride brought in and carried down the aisle in a coffin.

Her dress was completely black but she had red accessories.  Her hairpiece was a red ribbon.  She also has a red satin jacket she put on later when it got a bit cooler.  Her feet were also in red boots which set off the dress perfectly.

I had expected some unusual ceremony practices that were on the dark side but this did not happen.  If they did any kind of black magic it was done out of sight.  They did write their own vows, and truly I did not really catch what they said because it was a bit fast old English.

The reception also incorporated a black and red theme.  They did not allow any wine but red wine, and there were Bloody Mary’s and Ceasar’s available for everyone.  No children were present because the wedding was held so late.  There was a large air of mystery, the groom wore a striped wedding suit and had a cane with a goblin on the top.  I was never sure if he really used a cane, or if it was just for effect.

Gothic wedding dresses are not the only dresses available that come in red and black.  You might want to pan a medieval wedding and a black and red dress would also be appropriate there.

You do not need a specific theme to have a different color wedding dress.  You can choose whatever colors you want to have; after all it’s your day and your dress!
