Dress Code For After 5pm Wedding
Summary: There is a more unique dress code for weddings that occur after 5pm.  People have weddings at this hour for a variety of reasons, to book around their honeymoon schedule, the venue they want is only available at this time, or they are maybe looking to save some money as some places are less expensive after 5pm.

Regardless of the reason, there is a convention in dressing for this style of wedding.  For men, it is appropriate to wear a black tie and suit; for women, an evening gown.  These weddings can range from ultra sophisticated to very casual.  You do want to make sure you are wearing special apparel regardless.
A black beaded dress is appropriate to wear for an after 5 wedding.  

If you are going to a daytime wedding with evening reception you want to save the black beaded dress for the reception or another wedding altogether. A tux is not required for an after five wedding.  After five is the same as semi-formal, so a man would be expected to wear a dark suit and the woman who accompanies him a cocktail dress. After five weddings are great as they generally aren’t as long and focus more on the celebration after.  Because of the lateness children do not typically attend an after five wedding.

Most couples that attend an after five wedding will be wearing jackets.  This is partly due to the weather turning colder in the evenings.  Women who are dressing for an after five party want to ensure that they take inspiration from the weather and dress appropriately. The shoes that you wear to an after five wedding should also be practical.  My friend Heather wore high heels to an after five wedding and regretted it immensely.  She did not have to walk a lot but the evening was very long and her feet were blistered by the end.

If you don’t wear heels regularly it is not a good idea to wear them to a semi-formal event where you might spend a lot of time. More casual style shoes are pretty appropriate to wear to an after five wedding.
There might be the time you are invited to a wedding where you are completely unsure what to wear.  You don’t need to wing it, put in a call to the couple getting married.  They will surely tell you what they expect their guests to wear, and it might spare you some embarrassment at being over or under dressed.
