Chameleon Charm Bracelets

Summary: Aunt Martha gave me a gift of my first Chameleon charm bracelet when I was eight years old.  I remember some sterling silver charms that would shine prettily on my wrist, and the gorgeous crystal charms would reflect the light of the sun.  It also had a wealth of beautiful beads that changed colors.  This gave me hours of childish delight and fascination.

I lost my charm bracelet at the beach one day, a combination of wet hands and careless inattention sent it to the bottom of the ocean floor.  It was quickly swept into the sand.  I looked for it that day for several hours and even the next few days I tried to find it, but was not successful.

A chameleon will change colors to blend in with its surroundings.  A chameleon bracelet will similarly change colors through the beads and charms attached. Maybe that's what my bracelet did to get lost so quickly! The charms attached to the bracelet are also often designed in the shape of a chameleon, which explains the name.

Because of my past experience and enjoyment of my own chameleon bracelet I got my daughter, Vanessa her own chameleon bracelet when she was nine.  I do make sure she removes it prior to any beach expeditions so her bracelet doesn’t suffer the same fate as mine!

Now our trips to the mall always include a jewellery store search where we comb through the different selections to find different gemstone charms.  If one of us comes across a particular brand of charm that has interesting designs we will likely buy one of each item in the collection.

This is in part due to the relatively inexpensive price of each piece.  We have a large quantity of charms right now at home.  Vanessa often re-designs the entire look of her chameleon charm bracelet to suit either her mood or her attire.

Part of the beauty of having a chameleon charm bracelet is being able to change it so quickly.  If you are tired of one design, you break out your collection and tada – you have a brand new bracelet!  You can also hand design your own beads with a special kit or basic materials.

Teens love this type of craft at parties.  It is a simple matter of providing the charm bracelet and materials and gems for charms and any slumber party is complete.  Vanessa and her friends have this type of party regularly.  I hear them giggling over each other’s creations until the early hours in the morning. They don’t always make the charms for bracelets, they can use the charms to assemble other types of jewellery like a special pin or hair dressing.

The girls also make jewellery with chameleon charms for me as a thank-you gift for the party.  I keep all these treasures in my jewellery box and look through them often as each piece has a tale to tell.
